Wedding Dress Shopping: Step-By-Step Guide To Finding Your Perfect Dress

October 26, 2022 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

Kacie in her perfect dress!

You’ve just said “YES!” to your engagement and now it is time to find your perfect dress! We are going to be giving you the step-by-step process of shopping for your wedding dress from booking your appointment to saying “YES!” to your perfect dress. Get your inspiration and pricepoint

Step 1: Find your inspiration and price point

Are you looking for something glam or simple? Trendy or classic? Finding your gown inspiration gives you a good starting point for your bridal appointment. Look for inspiration on Pinterest or on local stores’ Instagrams. We post our wedding dress selection daily on Gretchen’s Bridal Gallery Instagram and Facebook!

You should also decide on what price point you want to stay within. You can find stores’ wedding gown price ranges on their websites or social accounts. If you can’t find it there, we recommend calling the store to ask. Gretchen’s Bridal Gallery Indianapolis has special order gowns from $1,200- $3,500. Gretchen’ Takes Indianapolis carries take-it-today (off-the-rack) gowns from $800-$1,500.

Step 2: Book your appointment

Now that you have your inspiration and price point, it is time to book your appointment!

Weekday appointments are typically less busy. Weekend appointments have a more party-like feel. Don’t overbook yourself, trying on wedding dresses can be tiring. We recommend only going to 2-3 different stores in a day! Be open to the fact that you might find your perfect dress at your first appointment.

Step 3: Arrive and meet your stylist

It’s appointment day! We recommend that you come to the store wearing something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Wear nude underwear and bras are optional when trying on dresses because they have built-in cups.

When you start your appointment your stylist will ask you about your inspiration and wedding. This is the time to show them all of your inspiration pics. We recommend saving your favorite pictures to an album on your phone to make it easier.

Step 4: Pick your selection

It is time to pick your wedding gown selection! At Gretchen’s Bridal Gallery you get to go through our selection with your stylist. Each bride will start with 4-5 gowns. Pick a few gowns that are different than your vision to try. Your stylist is your cheerleader! Stylists know the store selection and might have a few gowns in mind. Keep an open mind because many dresses look better on than on the hanger!

Step 5: Try-on

Your stylist will help you get in and out of your wedding dresses. The stylists will use clips and panels to give you the best idea of what the dress will look like in your size.

This is the time to tune into how you FEEL in each gown! Be as honest as you can with your stylist. The more honest information you give to your stylist, the better they can do their job. Keep in mind that it is completely normal to like something you didn’t think you would. Remember inspiration is just a starting point.

Step 6: Say YES!

When you find the one it is such an exciting moment! Some brides cry and some just smile. Don’t feel like you have to cry for it to be the one.

The Truth About Bridal Sizing

June 27, 2022 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

Your engagement ring is shining on your left hand as you stand in your undergarments in the fitting room of your first bridal appointment. Your stylist brings an array of beautiful options into your room. One of the dresses catches your eye, could this be one? You start to feel excited to try on your first dress. Suddenly, all of that excitement comes to a halt when you see the number on the tag. It is at least two sizes higher than your normal dress size.

As your stylist zips, clips, and pannels you into your first dress you start to feel a mix of emotions clouded by a number. You are not alone, almost every bride has had those exact thoughts. Even with the cautionary tales and warnings, your dress size can still come as a shock. Let’s demystify bridal sizing!

There are two main reasons for needing a larger wedding dress.

Reason #1

No, wedding dress designers aren’t purposefully making the dress smaller so you feel bad. Historically many wedding dress designers have been based out of Europe. It has become a common practice in the wedding dress industry. Even today many US-based designers tend to take on these sizing practices. European size charts tend to run smaller than American size charts.

Reason #2

Most wedding dresses are special orders, not custom-made. You will try on a sample of a special order gown. Wedding dress designers don’t keep a lot of stock, instead, they make the gowns as the orders come in. Those orders are given based on their design size chart.

Each designer has a unique size chart used for their dresses. Wedding dresses are typically made with only 1-2 inches of the seam allowance because of that it is standard practice to order to the highest size a bride measures to.

For example:

You could be a size 12 in your chest. Size 14 in your waist. Size 10 in your hips.

We would order you a size 14 wedding dress because it is much easier to take a dress in than to take it out.

Those two reasons make it common for brides to order a dress a few sizes larger than what they are used to wearing. Just remember that the number on your dress tag does not define you. If you don’t want to see it, simply cut the tag out. Your dress will be custom fit to you during alterations anyways.

4 Mistakes To Avoid When Shopping For Your Wedding Dress

January 3, 2022 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

Shopping for your wedding dress is an exciting time! We are going through the 4 biggest mistakes to avoid when shopping for your wedding dress.

Not having a clear budget.

Searching for your perfect wedding dress can be magical… but that magic can easily fade away if you fall in love with a dress out of your price point. Before you start searching for your perfect dress set a price point and stick with it. You can always allow yourself a little bit of wiggle room but set a firm stopping point. Bridal stores usually say what their gown price ranges are. Book appointments at bridal stores that line up with your price point. Gretchen’s Bridal Gallery has special order wedding dresses for $1,200-$3,500. Gretchen’s Takes has off-the-rack wedding dresses for $800-$1,200.

Not having an open mind.

We always recommend bringing some type of inspiration to your bridal appointment. Ultimately that inspiration is a starting point. We see bride’s all the time who are set on a fitted gown when they come in and walk out with a ballgown. It is ok to not like something that you thought you would. You try on gowns in person to see what you truly love. It is super common for stylists to throw in wild card dresses to see what you like.

Letting someone in your group control the appointment.

When you go into your bridal appointment you are assigned a stylist that will help guide you through your appointment. Even with a stylist YOU are ultimately in control. We want to support you and your decisions. Think of your stylist as your cheerleader. We will champion your feelings! Your opinions and our knowledge combined will make a great team! If someone in your entourage is challenging you and your opinions or making you feel less then your best, you might have to reevaluate their participation.

Being too hard on yourself.

Everyone wants to look and feel their best on their wedding day! It’s completely natural to be critical of yourself and how you look while wedding dress shopping. Ultimately you are trying on a sample dress that isn’t custom fit for you and just might not be your size. Remind yourself that it is about how you feel! You need to FEEL beautiful, confident, and like a bride in your dress. Just remember, regardless of what dress you choose your fiance and attendees of your wedding will think you are beautiful. If they don’t… maybe reconsider those people in your life (they might be haters).

Now that you learned the 4 biggest mistakes when shopping for your wedding dress, you are ready to book your bridal appointment. Gretchen’s Bridal Gallery Indianapolis has over 600 special order dress and Gretchen’s Takes has a wonderful selection of take-it-today gowns. We can’t wait to help you find your perfect dress!

Bridal Terms You Should Know: Silhouettes

November 15, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds Leave a Comment

When you walk into your first bridal appointment it can feel like people are speaking a different language. Not knowing bridal terms can make things feel more intimidating. It can also make it harder for you to describe what you want. We are here to help! Today we are breaking down the bridal terms for the six basic silhouettes.

Let’s start with the word silhouette…

A silhouette is simply the shape of the gown.

A Line

Any dress that gets wider from the waist to the hem. The smallest point sits at or above your waist then flares out all the way to the hem (the bottom of the skirt).

Justin Alexander a line gown with silk makado fabric thick straps and deep plunging neckline

Ballgown

A-line dress with even more volume. Ball Gowns have a wide and full skirt that is usually filled with layers of tulle or crinolines.

Morilee Ball Gown with off the shoulder straps, sparkle skirt blush color, and sparkle vine appliques
Morilee

Mermaid

A fitted dress that dramatically flares out at or just above the knees. The dramatic flair is caused by layers of tulle or crinoline. A mermaid gown gives the illusion of an hourglass silhouette.

Morilee Signature

Trumpet

A fitted dress that is less fitted around the hips and flares out at the middle thigh. It typically doesn’t have tulle or crinoline under the skirt. Trumpet style gowns are still dramatic but also have a sleek look.

Allure Bridals

Fit-and-Flare

If an A-line dress has too much volume and the trumpet is too fitted, the fit-and-flare will be perfect for you. Fit-and-Flare dresses are fitted through the top and waist but are not fitted waist down.

Maggie Sottero fit-and-flare gown crepe fabric with plunging neckline and laces on top and train gretchens bridal gallery indianapolis

Sheath

Sheath wedding gowns are fitted in the waist and fall straight down. This silhouette doesn’t have any volume and is sleek and effortless.

When To Start Shopping For Your Wedding Dress

August 4, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds Leave a Comment

Congratulations! You have a ring on your finger and are getting ready to walk down the aisle. There is just one catch… now you have to plan the wedding of your dreams. There are hundreds of wedding timelines online and every married person now wants to share their wedding planning experience.

If there is one thing that should be set in stone on your timeline it is that YOU should say yes to the dress 9-months in advance and here are some reasons why.

Reason 1: More gown options!

There are hundreds of wedding gown options out there. A standard special order wedding gown takes around 6 months to get to you. Don’t forget that you need to add in a few extra months for alterations. When you shop 9 months in advance you allow yourself to have all of the beautiful wedding gown options available. When you wait too long to shop you begin to be restricted to off-the-rack gowns. There is certainly nothing wrong with off-the-rack gowns but your options are more limited.

Reason 2: It will save you money!

Yes, shopping in advance can save you money! The longer you wait to find your dream wedding gown the more expensive things can be. Designers offer expedited shipping of gowns which is called a rush. That rush isn’t free though. A standard rush can range from $75 upwards to $300. Don’t forget… that is an additional fee to the current price of shipping. Additionally, many seamstresses charge extra for speedy alterations. During peak alterations season, you can be charged up to double to have quick alterations done.

Reason 3: Shopping is more fun!

Wedding dress shopping can be stressful and sometimes a little overwhelming, add a time crunch to that and it can be less than enjoyable. When you shop 9-months in advance you are able to fully enjoy your shopping experience! It gives you time to relax and enjoy instead of feeling like a race against the clock.

For some brides, this article just gave you a sigh of relief and for others, we can feel your heartbeat picking up. Don’t stress though, at Gretchen’s Bridal Gallery we are here for YOU! No matter what your timeline. Well… what are you waiting for? Book your wedding dress shopping appointment today at Gretchen’s Bridal Gallery.

Tips for Choosing Bridal Hair Accessories

July 13, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

Your bridal hair accessories have the power to transform your entire wedding day look. Whether you prefer a simple hairpin or dazzling tiara, choosing the perfect accessories involves a variety of important details. Here are a few of our best tips for brides searching for the perfect hair accessories.

choose your bridal hair accessories

Choose your Hairstyle

Before you can begin choosing your bridal hair accessories for your wedding day, you’ll first need to know what hairstyle you’ll be wearing. This allows you to pick accessories that fit not only your hairstyle but your overall wedding day look. Your stylist can also try the hair pieces on you beforehand so you’ll know which works and which accessories may not be a good fit.

Consider Your Dress

Another important detail to consider before deciding on hair accessories is your wedding dress. This sets the tone for the rest of your bridal ensemble as it allows you to match your accessories to the dress itself. For example, if your dress has lace or embellished details, you may opt for a lace headband or jeweled hairpin.

Know Your Options

There’s such a large selection of options when choosing bridal hair accessories. From classic combs and hairpins to statement headbands and flowers, every bride can find something she loves. The type of accessory will also depend heavily on your wedding hairstyle as many work best on specific styles. We recommend trying a few different options with your stylist to find which works best for you on your wedding day.

Change It Up

Having trouble deciding on a single hairstyle or accessory for your big day? Similar to your outfit changes, you can also switch up your accessories for each look. For example, you can wear a chic updo for your ceremony with a jeweled hair comb, then change to loose curls for your reception with a romantic tiara.

Summer Wedding Makeup Tips to Look Your Best

July 6, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

With its warm weather, sunny days, and beautiful outdoor venues, summer is the ideal season for a gorgeous wedding. However, the heat can also quickly lead to a makeup meltdown for brides who are unprepared. Here are a few of our best summer wedding makeup tips to help you look and feel your best on your special day.

Summer Wedding Makeup

Add a Pop of Color

Summer is the perfect season to include a pop of color in your wedding makeup. Add a touch of playfulness to your look with a bold lip in bright red or vibrant pink, or opt for a dramatic eyeshadow color instead. We recommend only choosing one statement piece in your makeup look to avoid too many contrasting colors.

Keep it Matte

Avoid any additional oils on your skin for your wedding by opting for matte products instead. A matte foundation, powder and bronzer work great for keeping your skin light and dry all day long. Moisturizers can often make your skin appear oily as well so feel free to skip these and any extra lotions on your wedding day.

Apply SPF

Protecting your skin is crucial at all times of year, but even more important during an outdoor wedding in the summer. Many foundations, creams and moisturizers have SPF included which make great options to include in your wedding day makeup routine. Sunscreen face mists are also an easy way to touch up your SPF as needed throughout your wedding.

Use Waterproof Products

In addition to using waterproof mascara on the day of your wedding, we recommend using waterproof products for every step of your eye makeup. Not only with this help avoid streaks on a hot day, you can also shed a tear without having to worry about your makeup running in the moment.

Have a Touch Up Kit

One of the most important details of your summer wedding makeup includes having a touch-up kit on hand for emergencies. Have a member of your bridal party or a family member keep the kit close by for any last minute touch ups. Some of our must-have items for your kit include blotting papers, face powder and lipstick for those moments you want to reapply.

Adorable Toddler Flower Girl Dresses for Your Wedding

June 29, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

Shopping for the perfect flower girl dress should be a fun experience, from playful colors to the fun patterns and prints. Find your favorite styles at Gretchen’s Bridal so your flower girl feels beautiful and confident walking down the aisle on your wedding day. Here are some of our favorite trends for toddler flower girl dresses to inspire you.

toddler flower girl dresses

Floral

A flower girl’s dress should feel young and playful, and floral prints embody both of these traits! You can opt for an all-over floral print, or go a bit simpler with elegant floral appliques or embroidered flower designs over the skirt or bodice. These often work best for spring and summer weddings, or even an outdoor ceremony.

Lace

Lace is one of the most popular trends for toddler flower girl dresses. It can be dressed up or down depending on how formal your wedding will be. There’s also a variety of ways to style the lace. Long or short sleeves, a lace bodice or a gorgeous lace pattern on the skirt are some of our favorites.

Tulle

Not only does a tulle skirt make every little girl feel like a princess, it’s also a comfortable fabric that allows for a lot of movement. Your flower girl won’t feel constricted by her dress – and you choose a tulle color that best fits your wedding theme. You can also add a few additional layers of tulle to create a fuller skirt.

Spaghetti Straps

With summer fast approaching, one of our favorite styles for toddler flower girl dresses is simple spaghetti straps. They add a touch of playfulness and youth to the dress, along with keeping the flower girl cool in the warmer months. These are especially great for outdoor weddings as well.

With the summer wedding season fast approaching, it’s time to begin the search for your seasonal wedding attire. Here are a few of our favorite gowns that are perfect summer formal wedding attire.

beaded formal gown

Dance the night away in this midnight blue gown that’s ideal for a formal summer wedding. The beautiful illusion lace bodice cascades into a shimmering skirt with a modest slip along the side. The dark blue works great for the summer season along with light fabric to keep you cool in the warmer months.

playful formal gown

Stand out from the crowd in this playful printed dress! The gown is ready for any formal wedding with an embellished band around the chest featuring delicate beading. The bold pattern and bright colors are great for summer, along with an airy fabric that’s perfect for outdoor weddings.

blue formal gown

One of our favorite looks for summer formal wedding attire is this beautiful two piece set. We love the deep blue color for a summer wedding, but the long skirt and matching top are also modest enough for a formal event. The top features dainty spaghetti straps with a bow in the back, while the skirt brushes the ground with a slit up the side.

floral formal gown

This gown is a work of art! The gorgeous black and white floral pattern is on trend for the season, with a front slit and tied waist. There is an invisible zipper on the bodice along with an open back and criss cross tie detailing. The gown’s fuller skirt is also comfortable and easy to move in throughout the ceremony and reception.

Glass Slipper Decor

Perhaps the most iconic detail from the film is the famous glass slipper. This is an easy element to include in a variety of ways throughout your princess themed bridal shower. Small glass slipper cake toppers add a touch of royalty to your bridal cake, or include some regal glass slipper place holders for guests at each table.

Shimmering Tulle

One of our favorite ways to decorate for any bridal shower is with a few yards of gorgeous tulle. We recommend using white or blue shimmering tulle for your princess themed bridal shower to pair with the bride’s Cinderella gown from the Disney Fairy Tale Weddings collection. Not only is tulle easy to hang, it will also go nicely with other decor as well.

Matching Tiaras

It wouldn’t be a princess bridal shower without a few sparkling tiaras! Whether the bridal shower guest list is big or small, be sure to order some fun tiaras for all of the guests to wear throughout the day. These also look great in photos and make the perfect souvenir for the bridal shower.

Royal Invitations

Invite your guests to the bridal shower with royal invites fit for any princess. Don’t be afraid to get creative with the design of your invitations. We recommend keeping the same white and blue color scheme, along with some added elements such as gold foil, glass slipper details and a gorgeous script font. Calligraphy is also a great option when addressing your invitations.

From the classic tux to bold blazers, here are just a few of our favorite groom tuxedo ideas for same-sex weddings.

Groom Tuxedo Ideas for Same-Sex Weddings

Bold Blazer

Let your personal style shine through on your wedding day with a bold blazer. Not only does it add a fun, unexpected pop of color to your attire, you can also coordinate with your partner. Look for a blazer in a bright color such as aqua or maroon, or even opt for a playful print or pattern.

Similar Color Combos

For grooms looking to coordinate their tuxedos for your special day, we recommend wearing the same suit color in different shades. This creates a cohesive look that isn’t too matching. Some of our favorite color combos are navy + light blue and lilac + pink.

A Classic Tux

If you want to keep your wedding day attire more clean and classic, you can’t go wrong with a traditional black and white tuxedo. They’re timeless yet modern, and look great on everyone. You also have the option to wear matching tuxedos, or mix it up with both black and white suit jackets.

Switch Up Accessories

One of the easiest ways to make same-sex weddings look unique to your own style is by switching up the accessories. Pride Brides: How to Choose Two Gowns

June 1, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

While there are no set rules when it comes to wedding day attire for same-sex couples, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of dress options. One of the most common concerns we see are brides who want to coordinate gowns but avoid styles that are overly matching. As we enter the first week of Pride Month, here are a few of our best tips for choosing two gowns for pride brides that complement each other.

how to choose two wedding gowns

Communicate Before Shopping

Before you both begin your wedding dress shopping, we recommend communicating what styles or the overall dress code you both love. Whether you decide to keep your wedding day attire casual, more formal, or even wear couture dresses, it’s helpful to discuss this ahead of time so you can better coordinate for the big day. You can also let each other know which silhouettes and color palettes you prefer.

Pride month brides

Find a Trusted Friend

One of the best parts of your wedding day will likely be the big reveal, or when you first see your partner walking down the aisle. For couples who prefer to surprise each other on your special day, we recommend finding a trusted friend to go wedding dress shopping with each of you. They’ll be able to help you coordinate gowns without you knowing exactly what the other is wearing, while also ensuring you both don’t choose something too similar.

Wear Different Colors

If both you and your bride find yourself loving similar dress styles, an easy fix is switching up your color palettes. While white is the traditional color for a wedding dress, colored dresses are also being a popular trend this year ranging from blush shades to jewel tones. If you don’t feel comfortable straying too far from a white dress, neutral colors such as taupe or cream are also appropriate – or even wearing different colored bridal shoes.

Switch Up Accessories

For pride brides who want to wear matching bridal gowns, switching up the accessories is a great way to coordinate while still showing off your unique styles. Whether it’s the veil, your jewelry, hair accessories or your flower bouquet, don’t be afraid to embrace your own personal style and make it your own.

Once you’ve discussed your preferred wedding day looks and are ready to start shopping, book an appointment with one of our bridal specialists today!

When choosing bridesmaid dresses for the women in your bridal party, it’s always important to consider the season as well. This can often affect the colors, fabric and silhouettes of the gowns that may work best. Here are a few stylish fall wedding bridesmaid dresses to consider for your wedding.

fall dresses for bridesmaids

With a cowl draped neckline and A-line skirt, this dress from House of Wu is flattering for all body types. The self-tie waist and chiffon fabric is comfortable yet elegant, and the autumn color is perfect for a fall wedding.

baby blue bridesmaids gown

This baby blue gown is one of our favorite fall wedding bridesmaid dresses for the season. Its spaghetti straps and v-neck are complimented by the embroidered bodice with a floral design. The empire waist also creates a relaxed and romantic silhouette for every bridesmaid.

Add a bit of sparkle to your bridal party with this fitted caviar mesh gown from Morilee. The A-line silhouette cinches near the waistline along with dainty spaghetti straps and a v-neck. The scoop back has a zipper as well, with a gorgeous silver color to compliment any fall wedding theme.

One of the more unexpected trends we’ve seen for the bridal fall 2021 season is two piece wedding outfits. Not only are they a surprising break from the traditional wedding gown, but they can be worn a variety of different ways. Brides can choose from a crop top and pants, a long sleeve shirt and skirt or even a pantsuit – there are nearly endless combinations.

What to Expect at Your Wedding Dress Appointment

April 27, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

Beginning the search for your wedding dress is one of the most exciting parts of the wedding planning process. From when to begin shopping to common mistakes we often see brides make, here are a few important details from our owner Gretchen to help prepare you for your wedding dress appointment.

what you need to know about wedding dress appointments

How early do you recommend brides begin dress shopping before their wedding?

Wedding dress shopping is exciting and a HUGE part of your wedding planning experience. I recommend shopping nine months to a year in advance. This timeline will give you access to all the dress options you could want. This timeline also makes the process less stressful and more relaxing.

What should brides bring with them to their dress appointment?

Brides should bring:

  • Wedding dress inspiration (Pinterest board, designer pictures, etc.)
  • A select group of people who will make you feel supported and confident in making a decision.
  • Water. Trying on dresses can get a little hot and a little sweaty.
  • Undergarments that make you feel comfortable. We recommend something in a nude color but don’t even worry about a bra because most dresses have cups built-in!
she said yes to the dress at Gretchen's bridal

Is there anything a bride should do to prepare for her appointment?

The most important things to do before your appointment are:

  • Find inspiration for your gown. Your stylist uses the gown inspiration as a starting point.
  • Research the shops in your area to see who aligns with your style and price point.
  • Discuss and set a price point. We always want to respect your price point!

Do you recommend a weekday appointment versus a weekend date? Why?

I recommend a weekday appointment for people who want a more chill and quiet shopping experience. The weekdays are less busy, so they are ideal for people who want something calmer.

I recommend a weekend appointment for those people who thrive off of energy. We like to say that the weekend has a “party-like atmosphere”. The weekends are when we take most of our appointments, so they are energetic.

Regardless of whether you want to visit us on the weekday or weekend, always make an appointment. When you book an appointment, we assign a stylist to help you through your shopping.

wedding dresses and wedding dress appointment

How many friends + family members should a bride bring to her appointment?

We recommend bringing only 3-5 guests. The people you invite to your wedding dress appointment should support you and what you want for your wedding.

What size range do your dresses come in?

At our Indy location, we carry special order gowns in the size range of 0-32 for all body types. Don’t forget alterations are what will make a dress perfect for you!

what to expect at your wedding dress appointment

What are some mistakes you often see brides make when shopping for a wedding dress?

Brides not being open to new styles. Brides come in with a vision of what they want, and sometimes when they have on that “dream dress,” it doesn’t match what they had in their mind. We see brides all the time coming in with one look in their mind, and then they fall in love with another. That is why you have a stylist who can help you through the process.

Brides are bringing the wrong people. Bring the people who make you feel confident and loved to your bridal appointment. Your appointment is a time to celebrate you! Include the people you don’t want at your appointment in other ways, like bringing them to your first fitting and have a dress reveal.

Brides are setting their expectations too high. Not every bride is going to cry when they find their dream dress. Not every dress will fit perfectly. Not every bride will fall in love with the first dress they try on. That is okay! Your shopping experience is special because it is YOURS. And just remember you only need to love one dress!

Why Weekday Wedding Dress Shopping is Best

March 30, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

It’s no surprise that bridal shops are at their most busy during the weekend. While Saturdays and Sundays are the most popular days for bridal appointments, did you know that one of the best times to shop is during the week? Here are just a few reasons why it’s better to do your wedding dress shopping on a weekday.

wedding dress shopping on weekdays

Personalized Attention

Similar to a private appointment, you will often have the whole store to yourself during the weekdays. Not only will you receive more personalized attention from your bridal specialist, the weekdays are also ideal for shy brides who prefer to try on dresses without a room full of people.

Flexible Schedule

Weekday wedding dress shopping is perfect for brides-to-be with flexible schedules. With so many people transitioning to remote work this past year, this is a great chance to take advantage of your weekdays and book an appointment. If this isn’t an option for you, you can also request a day off work or even come in on your lunch hour.

found the perfect dress at Gretchen's Bridal

Less Rush

More time to shop means less stress during your appointment. With fewer brides to share the store with on a weekday, you’ll be far less rushed during the try-on process and can really take your time with all the different styles to find one that feels right for you. You also won’t need to worry about the dress you love being tried on by other brides while browsing through our gowns.

Bring Your Bride Tribe

Since our store is less crowded during the weekdays, you’ll be able to bring a few more of your closest family and friends with you to your appointment. While we do still recommend keeping your bride tribe limited to 5 people or less, having a slightly larger group can help you feel more supported.Gretchen’s is also continuing to observe all social distancing guidelines with increased daily sanitization and masks required for all customers. If your friends have work during the weekdays, you can also video chat them during your appointment to show them your favorite gowns and styles.

Are you ready to find your dream wedding dress? Book an appointment with us today and receive $100 off all weekday book and buys!

The quality of online dresses simply does not match store quality a majority of the time. The cost difference between online and in-store shopping is also small.

Our Favorite Summer Wedding Gowns

March 9, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

With warm weather and beautiful sunshine, it’s no wonder that summer is one of the most popular seasons for a wedding. However, this sunny weather can also impact the type of dress you fall in love with for your wedding. From simple straps to beautiful embroidery, here are a few of our favorite summer wedding gowns.

the best summer wedding gowns

Strapless Summer Wedding Gowns

The Leah Dress by Allure Bridals

As one of the most timeless and popular wedding styles, a strapless dress is perfectly suited for a summer wedding. There’s nearly endless strapless gown styles to choose from as well since you can choose the shape of the rest of your dress, whether that’s a ball gown or tulle skirt. You can also include added details such as a beaded bodice or an embellished belt like this Allure Bridals gown.

Off the Shoulder

The Lizzy Dress by Gowns by Gretchen

An off the shoulder dress is one of our favorite summer wedding gown styles. Not only is it appropriate for the season, it’s a great way to show off your arms without committing to a fully strapless dress. Off the shoulder is also ideal for the warmer summer months as it helps keep you cool and allows for more movement.

Embroidery Overlay

The Carleigh Dress by Maggie Sottero

Summer is the perfect season to show off a bit more skin if you’re comfortable. This Maggie Sottero gown has a beautiful embroidered bodice complete with a light airy skirt. You can also take inspiration from the season and get creative with overlays such as floral appliqués on the bodice or skirt.

Spaghetti Straps

The Kim Dress by Justin Alexander

For brides looking for a more simple summer wedding gown design, this Justin Alexander dress is elegant and chic with its thin spaghetti straps and clean silhouette to hug your curves. This also allows you to have more fun with your accessories such as jewelry, hair pieces or your bridal shoes.

Summer Wedding Gowns with Flowing Train

The Lola Dress by Allure Bridals

This stunning Allure Bridals design has a bit of everything with an ethereal flowing train, breathable fabric and dainty floral appliqués. All eyes will be on you as you walk down the aisle with the train flowing beautifully behind you. We recommend opting for a lightweight train with airy fabric to help keep you cool and comfortable during summer, as well as being easier to maneuver.

Our Best Wedding Dress Shopping Tips

March 2, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

Shopping for your wedding dress is one of the most memorable parts of a wedding. Whether you already have a few styles in mind or want to try a variety of different options, here are just a few of our best wedding dress shopping tips to ensure you have a relaxed, enjoyable day.

wedding dress shopping tips

Start Early

Finding your perfect dress will take time, and rushing the process will only create stress. We recommend starting your search nine months to one year in advance of your wedding date. Our dress vendors can take six months to make and ship your gorgeous gown, so this allows plenty of time to ensure you receive exactly what you want. You’ll also be able to have alterations done if needed when you shop ahead of time.

Have an Open Mind

Perhaps the most important thing to bring with you to your wedding dress appointment is an open mind. Even if you have a specific style or neckline in mind, it’s helpful when brides are also willing to explore other options because you never know what dress you’ll fall in love with! Also remember that bridal runs small, with many designers running 2-4 sizes smaller than street wear. There is a good chance that you will try something that doesn’t fit. However, the size of the gowns that fit you does not define you.

Come Prepared

One of our best wedding dress shopping tips is arriving prepared for your appointment. You don’t need to be runway ready, however it can be helpful to come with your hair and makeup done so you have a better idea of what your overall bridal day ensemble will look like on your wedding day. We also recommend eating a good breakfast beforehand so you’re fueled up for a day of browsing and trying on various dresses.

Bring a Small Group

We encourage all of our brides to be mindful of who they bring with them to the bridal appointment. Do you want people there for moral support who will keep their opinions to themselves, or someone more outspoken who will tell you what looks best? Knowing what you want in terms of support can help you decide who to bring along. A smaller group of 3-5 people often works best to avoid an overwhelming number of opinions while shopping.

Be Honest

Your stylist is there to help you find the wedding dress you feel most beautiful in. Being honest with them from beginning to end allows them to help you that much more. Some good details to share with your stylist include your maximum budget, any areas you don’t want to highlight on your body and a few styles you have in mind. This helps avoid any miscommunication, along with finding a dress that truly fits your personal style.

When you’re ready to start shopping for your own wedding dress, book an appointment with us at Gretchen’s Bridal! “Come for the selection, stay for the experience and leave with your perfect dress!”

Multicolored Bridesmaid Dresses: Could This Trend Be for You?

February 23, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

One of the most popular trends we’ve seen emerge in recent years is brides stepping away from traditional matching bridesmaids dresses and opting for more creative designs such as multicolored dresses. Not only does this allow your bridesmaids the freedom to choose a dress they love, it also creates a beautiful color palette. Here are a few key details to consider when choosing multicolored bridesmaid dresses for your own wedding.

perfect multi colored bridesmaid dresses for my wedding

Choose Your Colors

One of the most difficult parts of choosing bridesmaid dresses is first selecting the colors. If you already have a color palette for your wedding, you can easily draw inspiration from there. When mixing colors for the bridesmaid dresses, you have a few different options:

  • The same dress in different hues
  • The same color across different dress styles
  • Dresses in the same color family (pink, red, fuchsia, maroon, etc.)

Another great option is to choose your colors ahead of time and give your bridesmaids swatches of those colors. This allows them to find a dress in a style that feels most flattering to them, while also keeping with the color scheme for your wedding day.

Pair With Your Theme

Whether your wedding theme is more rustic, nautical or simply seasonal, it’s important to consider your wedding colors and overall theme before selecting colors for your bridesmaid dresses. For example, if your core colors are blue and gold, a navy or baby blue would blend well with both to create a cohesive look for your wedding day. You can also match the bridesmaid dresses to their bouquets or your own bridal bouquet as well.

Minimal Accessories

No matter what colors you choose for your multicolored bridesmaid dresses, you can top off the wedding day look with accessories of your choice. For jewel-toned gowns, we recommend minimal accessories so as not to clash with the bright colors and draw focus away from the gowns. However for more blush-toned dresses, you have more freedom to be creative with accessories such as hairpins or jewelry. You can also brainstorm with your bridesmaids about what accessories they’d like to wear for the day if they have any personal preferences.

Tips and Tricks

Coordinating various colors for your bridesmaid dresses may seem challenging, but there are a few ways to create a more uniform look even with different shades. Whether you’re looking for more formal floor-length dresses, or a shorter dress for a summer wedding, we recommend having the same length across all of your bridesmaids dresses regardless of which style they choose. You can also tie them all together with one common detail such as the same dress fabric, similar necklines or a matching necklace.

The Best Wedding Dress for Your Body

February 16, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

Every bride should feel confident and beautiful on her wedding day! Knowing what styles and necklines look best on your body can also help show off your best assets. Here are a few of our favorite wedding dress styles to highlight your favorite body parts, along with tips for taking attention away from those you aren’t quite ready to show off.

the best wedding dress for your body type

Arms

Whether you want to rock your toned arms in your wedding dress or draw attention elsewhere, there’s a variety of great dress styles that can do both.

  • Show It Off: Strapless, spaghetti straps
  • Don’t Want Attention: Cap sleeve, off the shoulder, flutter sleeve
  • Pro Tip: Many brides opt for full sleeves when they don’t want to show off their arms, but this can actually draw more attention to them.

Shoulders

For brides looking to show off their shoulders, be sure to choose a neckline that flaunts your beautiful collarbone and upper body.

  • Show It Off: Off the shoulder, strapless
  • Don’t Want Attention: High neck, halter
  • Pro Tip: Bring the point of interest to your neck area to diminish the look of broad shoulders.

Waist

The waistline of your wedding dress can make all the difference, whether you’re looking for a fitted bodice or a loose silhouette.

  • Show It Off: Natural waist (fitted or flowy)
  • Don’t Want Attention: Empire waist, drop waist
  • Pro Tip: Make your waist look more defined by adding a belt to your dress.

Chest

From the bust area to your collarbone, there are several great wedding dress options your bridal specialist can select for all bust sizes.

  • Show It Off: Plunging necklines, scoop neck, off the shoulder
  • Don’t Want Attention: High neck, sweetheart, boat neck
  • Pro Tip: Bodice structure is key when choosing your dress. The larger your bust, the more support you will want in the gown.

Back

A low or backless dress is one of our favorite wedding dress styles to make a strong, dramatic statement as you walk down the aisle.

  • Show It Off: Low back, key hole, illusion back
  • Don’t Want Attention: Illusion back with appliques, straight across
  • Pro Tip: Most illusion back gowns can be lined during alterations for brides who prefer more coverage.

Stomach

While the stomach can be an area of insecurity for many women, your bridal specialist is there to help you choose a dress that highlights (or hides) your favorite features.

  • Show It Off: Mermaid dress, sheath, fit and flair
  • Don’t Want Attention: Ball gown, A-line, fitted gown with ruching
  • Pro Tip: Fabric thickness and the fit of your dress are equally important. Lace and beading details also help disguise areas you may not want to highlight.

Hips

When choosing a dress to show off your hips and back end, we recommend a fitted dress style that hugs all the right spots.

  • Show It Off: Mermaid dress, fit and flair
  • Don’t Want Attention: A-line, ball gown
  • Pro Tip: Button details can accentuate your shape and make your booty look more perky.

February 9, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

When choosing a hairstyle for your wedding, it’s also important to consider the style of your dress. While some necklines look better with a tight updo, others might pair well with a softer hairstyle. From chic buns to loose waves, here’s an easy guide on how to pick the best wedding hairstyles to match your dress neckline.

how to choose the best wedding hairstyles

Low Back

Low or open-back dresses can be breathtaking, and are meant to be shown off. Instead of hiding the details, we’ve found that some of the best wedding hairstyles for a low back dress are textured braids and low ponytails. Depending on the design of your dress, half up/half down styles are great as well – especially for shorter hair. You can also pull your hair back into a relaxed fishtail braid to accentuate the low back neckline.

Strapless

Perhaps the most popular neckline is a strapless wedding dress. It’s also incredibly versatile and allows you to be more creative with your hairstyle. Opt to wear your hair down with loose waves, or even wear it half-up if you can’t decide on an updo. For brides who want to show off their shoulders, we recommend a high ballerina bun for added glamour.

High Neck

Not only is a high neck gown one of the more dramatic necklines, it also draws the eye directly up to your face. This is ideal for a chic updo to let your neckline be the main focus of your dress. Sweeping your hair back into a textured bun or sleek ponytail can also help keep your wedding hairstyle simple yet elegant.

Off the Shoulder

An off the shoulder neckline is both feminine and romantic, just as your hairstyle should be to match. Similar to a strapless dress, an off the shoulder gown allows you to style your hair in numerous ways. Keep it soft with loose waves that are side-swept with a beautiful hairpin or floral headpiece. This neckline also works well with textured braids or a charming braided updo with a few floating curls.

Boat Neck

A boat neckline, also known as a bateau neck, is a classic design that stretches across your collarbone creating a horizontal neckline. We recommend pulling your hair back into a  low bun or chignon to frame your face. Keeping the hair off your shoulders will highlight your shoulders, as well as making your face the center of your wedding day ensemble. For a more modern look, you can also opt for a high pony or low side bun balanced with a fun hair accessory.

Small Wedding Bouquet Ideas That are Simply Stunning

February 2, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

Not only is a smaller bridal bouquet easier to carry and often more affordable, it can also help accentuate your wedding dress to show off your flattering silhouette. Here are just a few small wedding bouquet ideas to help inspire your florals on your special day.

beautiful small wedding bouquet ideas

Pomanders

A classic pomander bouquet is a sphere-shaped flower arrangement usually suspended by a ribbon on your wrist. While this is traditionally carried by the flower girl, it also makes a beautiful and unexpected bridal bouquet. You can customize to your liking such as adding colorful jewels, or suspending the flowers with a string of pearls or twine instead.

All Greenery

One of our favorite trends for a small wedding bouquet is an ensemble made up of all greenery. This is an especially great option if you’ll be hosting a backyard or outdoor ceremony, or for a rustic wedding theme. There’s a large selection of greenery you can choose from such as ferns, ivy, eucalyptus and more.

Single Stem

Keep your wedding bouquet simple and choose only one elegant, large bloom flower such as a single hydrangea to make up your bouquet. While this is more minimal, it can also be far more eye-catching. Don’t forget to keep the stem long so you can easily carry it down the aisle, and finish the look with a satin ribbon tied around the stem.

Floral Hoop

Skip the traditional wedding bouquet all together and instead opt for a beautiful floral hoop. This one of a kind bridal accessory is sure to make a statement – and you can decorate the hoop with whatever flowers you’d like. We recommend white roses and a bit of greenery for an added romantic touch, or flowers that match your wedding colors are great as well.

Dried Flowers

One of the newer trends we’ve seen emerge in recent months is dried flowers in place of a fresh bouquet. You can find them in a variety of textures and colors, which makes for a truly unique small wedding bouquet. Some of our favorite dried flower options include pampas grass, palm leaves and seed pods. And since they’re already dry, you’ll be able to keep your wedding bouquet as a keepsake long after your ceremony!

Why Colorful Bridal Shoes May Be the Accessory You Need

January 26, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

Creating your dream wedding day look doesn’t end with just your dress. Add a playful twist on tradition with a pop of color for your shoes, whether it’s a bold hue or pretty pastel. Here are a few details to consider when choosing colorful bridal shoes for your wedding day.

wedding day colorful bridal shoes

Consider Shoe Style

The style of your bridal shoe is very dependent on your dress’ style, along with your own personal style as well. Do you prefer a classic strappy sandal, or something more bold such as a peep toe pump? You can also match the fabric of your dress to your colorful bridal shoes such as silk or satin, or add extra details such as beading, florals or lace designs.

Compliment Your Color Palette

When choosing a shoe color, it’s important to keep in mind your overall color palette. This includes your wedding colors, decor and style of your dress. Don’t be afraid to add a surprising pop of color with your shoes such as electric blue, a classic red or a metallic jewel tone that pairs with nearly everything.

Playful Patterns

Another great option to consider when opting for colorful bridal shoes is a fun, playful pattern or print. This is most ideal if your wedding dress style is more simple and won’t clash with the pattern of your shoes. Florals are a popular go-to design, or you can choose a more bold print such as a geometric design, nautical stripes or animal print. We recommend matching some colors of the pattern to your wedding colors as well for a more cohesive bridal look.

Timeline

While you do have more time allotted to shop for bridal shoes, you should aim to have your chosen pair in-hand for your very first alterations appointment. Not only does this allow you to see your full bridal ensemble together with your dress, shoes and any accessories, it’s also important for the tailor to hem your dress accurately with your heel height.

In the end, you should feel comfortable and beautiful in whichever colorful bridal shoes you choose for your special day. Looking for a dress to match your shoes? Book an appointment with us today and shop our selection of more than 600 dress styles!

2021 Wedding Colors That You Must See

January 12, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

One of the first and most important steps in the wedding planning process is choosing your overall color scheme. From old school brights to classic blue, here are some of the trending 2021 wedding colors that you’ll be seeing this year.

trending colors for 2021 weddings

Powder Blue

While blue has always been a classic wedding color, light blue is rising in popularity for 2021. This playful color works especially well for spring and summer weddings, but can also be combined with darker hues such as navy for winter and fall ceremonies. We recommend creating a beautiful fresh bouquet with some of your favorite blue flowers such as hydrangeas, sweet peas and delphiniums.

Papaya Orange

This is one of our favorite 2021 wedding colors! Bright and vibrant, papaya orange is a more trendy version of the traditional coral and peach colors you often see at weddings. This accent color looks great with other vibrant hues and earthy tones alike so style it how you see fit with your own wedding decor.

Champagne

Not only does champagne make a great celebratory beverage, it’s also a trending wedding color for the new year. Neutral colors have become increasingly popular and are expected to remain for 2021. We recommend champagne colored dresses for your bridesmaids for an elegant touch, along with a neutral color palette for your wedding invitations, florals and more.

Greenery

green is a trending wedding color in 2021

From deep forest green to a lighter pistachio, green is one of the most universally flattering colors on all skin tones. We expect to see green hues make a comeback as one of the most prominent 2021 wedding colors. Since your bouquet and florals will already include some greenery, bring a fresh feel to your wedding colors by mixing darker and lighter greens together throughout your decor.

Old School Brights

The 80’s and 90’s had some of the most fun colors throughout the decades, and they’re here again for 2021. With bold colors such as fuschia, cerulean and cherry red, this color collection makes creating your color palette a piece of cake. We recommend adding a few statement pieces as well such as a customized neon sign with you and your partner’s names or even a brightly colored tux for the groom!

Unique Wedding Guest Book Ideas You Will Love

January 5, 2021 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

While your wedding photos are a great reminder of your special day, a guest book can also be a fun way to save your cherished memories. Here are just a few of our favorite wedding guest book ideas to create a truly unique keepsake for years to come.

creative wedding guest book ideas

Maps + Postcards

use a globe as a guest book
Photo Courtesy of Erin McGinn Photography

For couples who love adventure, we recommend a fun travel-themed wedding guest book. Collect a few vintage postcards, world maps or even a globe for guests to sign and leave their well wishes. You can also ask your guests to leave suggestions on where you and your partner should travel next, or for your honeymoon!

Vintage Typewriter

Go old-school with your guest book and have a vintage typewriter available for guests to use to type their messages. If you’re unable to find a working machine online, you can still place an inoperable one alongside the table for a rustic theme.

Puzzle Pieces

Piece together all of your guests’ messages with a crafty puzzle full of sweet notes. Encourage your guests to each pick one puzzle piece to sign their name or leave a short message for you to read later. Don’t forget to choose a large enough puzzle for each guest to have a piece to sign.

Jenga Blocks

Keep the fun and games going with a classic Jenga set! Have guests each sign a block and you’ll be able to look back on the memories each time you play in the future. This affordable wedding guest book idea can also be used during your reception for some quick games once everyone has signed.

Tree Ornaments

If you’ll be having a Christmas-themed wedding, ornaments make the perfect guest book alternative. Have some markers on hand for guests to sign their own ornament so you can hang them on your own Christmas tree at home! We recommend having a cushioned box to place the ornaments once they’re done to help keep them from breaking.

Polaroid Photo Wall

One of our favorite wedding guest book ideas is a polaroid photo wall. Not only will you get great photos from throughout your wedding, you can also allow guests to take a few home as a souvenir. Leave a camera (or two) out for guests to snap photos throughout the reception – and be sure to have plenty of film available!

DIY Wedding Gifts You Can Give

December 29, 2020 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

While an expensive gift may seem like the ideal option for some, a handmade project is often much more special. From custom cufflinks to a personalized cocktail tray, here are some of our favorite DIY wedding gifts for the couple on their special day.

DIY wedding gifts that the couple will love

Handwritten Coffee Mug

Some of our favorite DIY wedding gifts are the ones that are handwritten with love. These personalized mugs are quick and easy, and let you be as creative as you’d like. Simply use a permanent marker to draw your design on the mug, stick it in the oven and you’re all set!

Photo Collage

You can never go wrong with a great photo collage. Not only is it a great way for the couple to look back on their memories, you can also choose some of your favorite moments with them as well. Display the photos however you’d like, whether it’s in a wooden frame, arranged in the shape of a heart or attached to string so they can easily hang it in their own home.

Custom Cufflinks

Not sure what to give the groom on his big day? Custom cufflinks are an easy DIY wedding gift and can be given to the groom, his groomsmen or even the father of the bride. You can fill the cufflinks with whatever design you’d like such as his initials, a short phrase or an image of a ring.

Personalized Cutting Board

For the couples who love to cook, a cutting board is the perfect DIY wedding gift. Make it extra special by personalizing it with their initials, names or wedding date as well. You will need a wood burning tool for this at-home project, but they can be found in most craft stores for under $20.

Cocktail Tray

Serve up a fun gift that the couple will use over and over! A DIY cocktail tray is the perfect addition to their bar cart, kitchen or living room. Once you’ve found a plain tray, simply decorate it with paint, tape or other fun designs. We recommend covering the finished product with a protectant spray as well.

Ring Dish

Now that the couple has some new bling on their ring fingers, a ring dish makes the ideal DIY wedding gift! All you’ll need is some adhesive vinyl and a pair of small bowls for this project. Make one for both the bride and groom with customized initials on each dish in their favorite color, or even add some glitter for extra flair.

Is a Couples Wedding Shower Right for You?

December 15, 2020 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

2020 has been a year of new traditions – and weddings are no different. From virtual ceremonies to receptions at home, couples are finding themselves creating new traditions, including a couples wedding shower. Here are a few important details you should consider before planning a wedding shower with your partner.

how to plan a couples wedding shower

Finding a Venue

Choosing the perfect venue that both you and your partner love is one of the most important aspects of planning a couples wedding shower. We recommend a location that has special meaning to each of you such as where you had your first date, where he proposed, a local restaurant you both enjoy or even your backyard if you’re on a set wedding budget.

The Guest List

Creating a guest list for a couples wedding shower can seem complicated, especially depending on the size of your party. Be sure that you and your partner agree upon a set number of invited guests and try to have an even number from both sides. You’ll also need to decide if guests are allowed a plus-one and if children are also invited. Don’t forget to mention that it’s a couples shower on your invitations as well so guests can plan gifts accordingly.

Gift Giving

Since your guest list will likely be longer due to a combined shower, we recommend creating a gift registry for your guests. While you can still include the traditional items like towels and kitchenware, don’t be afraid to get creative with your wish list as well. Include a few gifts for each of you such as power tools, electronics or some beautiful cashmere slippers.

Fun Games

One of the most fun parts of any wedding shower is the games. Whether you’re hosting an indoor or outdoor couples wedding shower, there are several games to choose from. Some of our favorites include classic corn hole, charades, a scavenger hunt or couples trivia. You can also include prizes for the winners such as homemade treats, succulents and gift cards.

Not only does a couples wedding shower allow you to share the day with your partner, you also get to celebrate your engagement together with family and friends.

Go Naked

Skip the normal cake frosting and opt for a naked wedding cake! Not only does it have a more natural look, you can also decorate it with fresh flowers, powdered sugar or buttercream between layers for some extra sweetness.

Gold Foil

A rustic wedding cake doesn’t have to be plain or boring. No matter which flavor or frosting you choose, adding a few details of gold foil accents can make any cake shine! You can also opt for silver foil in place of gold depending on your wedding colors and overall theme.

Berry Pie

Want to surprise your guests? Go with a non-traditional wedding pie instead! We recommend a berry pie for a more rustic design – and a more delicious treat. Be sure to research which berries will be in season for your wedding as well so you’ll have the ripest, sweetest choices!

Add Greenery

One of our favorite rustic wedding cake ideas is topping off your cake with some greenery. You can choose from simple ferns, rosemary sprigs, eucalyptus, lavender – or even mix and match! Succulents also make a great addition as unexpected cake toppers.

Red Velvet

What could be more romantic than a red wedding cake? Red velvet has a bold, rich flavor that also adds a pop of color when you slice into the cake. You can top it with any frosting of your choosing – and add a few extra details like fresh berries or flowers.

A Christmas Themed Wedding: Everything You Need to Plan Your Big Day

November 17, 2020 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

Christmas is one of our favorite times of year, from festive decorations to the holiday music and overall good cheer. It’s also one of the most fun seasons to plan a wedding! Here are a few of our best tips for planning your own Christmas themed wedding to get you in the holiday spirit.

tips for an unforgettable christmas themed wedding

Send Early Invites

Since your wedding will be hosted in the middle of the holiday season, we recommend sending out your invitations as soon as possible. People are generally busier this time of year and the sooner they have your wedding invite, the sooner they can save the date. This is especially helpful for anyone who may be traveling to your wedding so they can make accommodations early as well.

Find a Festive Venue

The holidays are the most festive time of year, which also means beautiful decorations. Whether you’re looking for fresh pine trees, snow, string lights or wreaths, try searching for a venue that has all of the above! Many venues will put up full holiday decorations that fit perfectly with a Christmas themed wedding. It also takes a lot of the stress off of you when it comes to finding and planning decor.

christmas theme wedding

Create a Themed Playlist

What better way to get down on the dance floor than with your favorite Christmas songs? There are almost endless songs to choose from when it comes to creating a holiday playlist for your wedding. Curate your own playlist on an app like Spotify or simply ask your DJ to create their own playlist of Christmas tunes. Some of our upbeat favorites include “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and “Run Rudolph Run”.

Choose a Holiday Palette

While the traditional Christmas colors are red and green, don’t be afraid to stray from these and find a holiday palette that fits your wedding. Warm colors look great with holiday decor such as maroon, emerald or navy. Or go more frosty with whites and neutral colors to recreate the look of snow. You can also add in some pops of shine with silver and gold accents, or even velvet.

wedding theme christmas

Have a Dessert Bar

Some of our favorite desserts come out at Christmas, so why not treat your guests to some holiday goodies as well? Set up a bar full of the traditional favorites such as spiced apple cider or hot chocolate. Guests can then add their own garnishes such as peppermint, cinnamon sticks, toffee and marshmallows. You can also make it adult friendly by having some alcoholic beverages on the side.

Give Fun Wedding Favors

Everyone loves going home with a great party favor! Not only do they serve as a fun souvenir of your special day, you can also get creative with your gift bags – especially for a Christmas themed wedding! Add a few seasonal treats such as an ornament with your wedding date or initials, mini bottles of eggnog, jingle bells or a mini wreath they can hang at home. You can also raffle off your centerpieces at the end of the night so a few lucky guests can go home with a beautiful floral arrangement or centerpiece of your choice.

Winter Wedding Dresses: Must Haves You Should Consider

November 10, 2020 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

When the seasons change, so does the weather which often means chillier temperatures for winter weddings. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style for warmth when it comes to choosing the perfect dress! Here are a few details to consider when searching for winter wedding dresses.

Gorgeous winter wedding dresses to consider for your big day

Warm Fabrics

With the cooler winter air, you’ll want to pay attention to your dress fabric because this can make a large difference in keeping you warm on your wedding day! Slightly heavier fabrics will hold up better in the colder temperatures. Popular fabric choices for winter wedding dresses include silk mikado, velvet and brocade.

Layer Up

Adding some layers to your wedding day look not only helps keep the frost away, but also adds some subtle style. Depending on just how cold it will be, we recommend choosing either a faux fur wrap, fuzzy shawl or even a cascading cape. Be sure to try them on with your wedding dress beforehand as well to see the complete look.

Add Some Shimmer

Stand out from the crowd (and the snow) by adding some shimmer to your winter wedding dress. Whether you choose a sparkling bodice, shimmering sleeves or even glitter accents covering the gown, it’s also a perfect touch for the holiday season.

Long Sleeves

Long sleeves are one of our favorite details for a winter wedding dress. There are several ways to style these, such as fully covered sleeves or sheer fabric covered with elegant lace appliqués down the arms. You can also opt for a half sleeve or 3/4 length depending on which style you prefer.

Have a Second Dress

If you really want to avoid the layers and wear a sleeker, thinner dress, we recommend having a second dress on hand once you move indoors for your reception. Your second look can be a bit simpler and also more comfortable so you can dance the night away without having to worry about feeling confined.

Unique Wedding Themes That You Will Love

November 3, 2020 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

While planning your dream wedding, the theme you choose can impact nearly all details of the planning process. From your venue to your catering menu, a great theme can help you draw inspiration and create a truly special day. Here are a few unique wedding themes we’re loving right now for your own wedding day.

unique wedding ideas for every bride

Carnival

Add some nostalgia to your wedding day with a carnival theme! Not only is it fun for both children and adults, you can really get creative with this unique wedding theme. If you’ll be hosting an outdoor wedding, you can incorporate a replica of big top carnival tent along with some carnival games such as a ring toss. You can even add some tasty food items like cotton candy, churros and funnel cakes for desert.

Movie + TV Show

Do you and your partner have a favorite movie or TV show that you love to watch together? Draw inspiration from your favorite characters and create a wedding theme centered around the setting and location, plot, decor and more! This can all help influence different details of your wedding such as your bridesmaids dresses, wedding cake and venue as well.

Safari

Transport your guests to a jungle far, far away with an exotic safari! We recommend an outdoor venue to truly recreate the feeling of being on safari, with large trees and a lot of greenery. You can also setup camp-inspired seating and decor with neutral colors and linens. Animal print is a fun addition as well, and can be included on your invitations, table settings and even your wedding cake! Small animal figurines of giraffes, lions and elephants also make great centerpieces – and guests can take them home as souvenirs after the wedding.

Fairytale

Every bride wants to feel like a beautiful princess on her wedding day. It’s also one of the most popular themes we see for weddings, and with good reason! Add some of your favorite details from your favorite fairytales such as a horse-drawn carriage, a cascading flower arch, romantic lighting and a venue with a grand ballroom. You can also shop the full Disney Fairy Tale Weddings Collection at our store to find the dress of your dreams!

Travel

Since travel has been put on hold this year, treat your guests to a travel-inspired getaway on your wedding day! Pay homage to some of your favorite destinations with globe decor and travel-themed wedding invitations. Some of our favorite travel decor ideas include luggage tags for place cards, a catering menu featuring foods from around the world and passport-themed save the date cards.

From rustic barns to sprawling golf courses, here are a few wedding venues in Southern Indiana that are perfect for your special day.

Southern Indiana wedding venues that you must see

The Pepin Mansion

First built in 1851, the Pepin Mansion sits on New Albany’s “Historic Mansion Row” and was recently restored to a bed and breakfast, wedding and event venue. The mansion can seat up to 140 guests indoor, or 350+ for an outdoor ceremony on their main lawn. Their all-inclusive wedding package includes everything from the planning process to music and accommodations. There is also a ‘parlor wedding’ option if you’d like a smaller ceremony which allows for up to 60 guests and access to the venue for three hours.

The Grand

Not only does The Grand have more than 12,000 square feet of event space, it also has a selection of diverse floor plans for you to choose from for your wedding. This venue is ideal for larger weddings as well since it can accommodate up to 450 guests. The Grand offers their own professional coordinating service to help bring your vision to life, along with rehearsal time prior to your wedding, ceremony decor, cake cutting and fresh flowers.

Montgomery Farms

With 40 acres of beautifully landscaped lawns, rolling hills and wooded trails, Montgomery Farms is one of our favorite wedding venues in Southern Indiana. Located in Scottsburg, the farm is also home to a picturesque 150-year-old barn with two stories that is perfect for your ceremony. Montgomery Farms is open seasonally each year from April through October. Their wedding package includes a venue coordinator, in-house DJ, bridal and groom suites, housekeeping and more.

Planning a Small Intimate Wedding: Your Ultimate Guide

October 20, 2020 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

While small weddings have become the new normal this year, they also have a few advantages such as a less expensive budget and a more stress-free planning process. Here are some of our best tips for planning a small intimate wedding that you’ll never forget.

learn how to plan a small, intimate wedding yourself

Limit the Guest List

Our first tip for planning a small intimate wedding is to look at who you are planning to invite. An easy way to keep your guest list down for a small intimate wedding is to limit your guests’ plus ones. Depending on how small you’d like to keep it, you can choose to allow plus ones only for guests who are in long-term relationships or even have an age limit of 18 years or older. We recommend including this on your wedding invitations as well so guests can plan ahead and give you an accurate RSVP.

Make It Personal

With a smaller guest list, you’ll also be able to add some personalization where you can. Get creative with some fun welcome boxes for your guests or party favors that they’re sure to love. If your guest list is under 10 to 20, you can even consider monogramming a few of their favors with their initials or names, such as a warm blanket or glassware for them to bring home.

Sit Family Style

Another simple idea to create a more intimate atmosphere for your wedding day is to setup family-style banquet tables. Not only does it make it easy to have great conversations with all the guests at your table, it’s also more cozy with everyone all together instead of separated at different tables. If your wedding will be taking place in the warmer months, we recommend setting up your table outside along with some romantic string lighting and candles for the table.

Stay the Weekend

Since you’ll have a much smaller guest list, it can be fun to make your wedding a weekend-long affair and invite your guests to stay on-site. When searching for the perfect wedding venue, be sure to check if they offer accommodations as well to make it easier. You can even leave some fun personalized goodies in your guests’ rooms before they check in.

Splurge a Little

One of the best parts of having a small intimate wedding is it gives you more room in your budget to splurge in the areas you really care about. Since you’ll be saving money on things like a large catering order, you can use that money for things like a beautiful ice sculpture, extra special florals or a great photographer!

Unexpected Bridesmaid Dress Colors That Might Surprise You

October 6, 2020 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

We know choosing a great color for your bridesmaid dress can seem overwhelming. While your bridesmaids may have different preferences, finding a color that looks great on all doesn’t have to be a challenge. Here are a few unexpected bridesmaid dress colors that may just surprise you.

how to choose bridesmaid dress colors

Sunshine Yellow

While yellow may be intimidating to some, a bold sunshine yellow looks surprisingly good on a wide variety of skin tones. We recommend pairing the color with some fresh greenery in your bouquets. Yellow is also an especially great bridesmaid dress color for the spring or summer months, or for an outdoor wedding.

Jewel Tones

Jewel tones are one of our favorite color schemes for bridesmaid dresses. They’re chic and sophisticated, yet still allow you to have fun with the rich colors. Some of our favorites are emerald green, deep purple or even a shimmering gold.

Shades of Gray

Simple yet elegant, a classic gray is a great choice of bridesmaid dress colors if you’re looking for something more minimal for your bridesmaids. Whether you opt for a darker gray or go a bit lighter, the color will also go well with nearly any and all accessories as well.

Mix + Match

Another truly unexpected bridesmaid dress color is mixing and matching your favorites. Choose a color palette that goes well with your wedding colors and theme, then let your bridesmaids choose different shades within that palette. This also allows your bridesmaids to wear a color they feel comfortable in for your special day.

How to Have an Online Wedding and Still Make it Special

September 15, 2020 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

While large gatherings have been put on hold for the time being, many couples have turned to online weddings to say their “I do’s”. Some states have even made virtual wedding ceremonies legal, such as California, New York and Iowa! Here are a few ideas to help you have the best online wedding and still make it special for you and your guests.

the best way to have your online wedding

Do Some Decorating

Whether you’re having your online wedding in the outdoors, your backyard or even in your living room, don’t forget the decorations! Opt for some fun wedding-themed decor such as banners, ring-shaped balloons and a custom photo background to really set the mood.

Live Stream Your Wedding

With so many couples opting for a virtual wedding, live streaming your ceremony is a great way to include all your friends and family who can’t be there in person. It’s also incredibly easy as long as you have a good internet connection! Choose from a variety of platforms like Zoom or Facebook Live, and anyone who tunes in can watch you say “I do”.

Virtual Reception

An online wedding can still have an amazing after party! Invite your guests to get dressed up for the event and celebrate with your closest family and friends. You can use the same streaming platform as your live stream with all the same fun as an in-person reception. Create a playlist of your favorite tunes, invite guests to make toasts, cut your cake and sip on cocktails together to celebrate your new marriage.

Take Photos

Your wedding day is something you’ll remember for the rest of your life – don’t forget to take time throughout your ceremony and reception to capture the moment as well! Whether you have a friend, family member or photographer who can take photos (at a safe distance) or if you take them yourselves with self timer, these are memories you’ll cherish forever!

Fall Bridal Bouquets: Trending Floral Arrangements for Your Big Day

September 1, 2020 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

With so many beautiful blooming flowers, fall is full of options to include in your wedding day bouquet. Dahlias, sunflowers and roses are just a few of our favorites in season during this time of year. They can all come together to create a gorgeous floral arrangement! Here are a few trending ideas to draw inspiration from when making your own fall bridal bouquet.

fall bridal bouquets that you will love

Monochromatic Colors

Can’t decide on a favorite flower? Go with a simple yet elegant monochromatic color scheme for your bouquet! Choose as many flowers as you’d like in the same color palette. We recommend using no more than four different shades of the same color to create this effect so your bouquet isn’t too overwhelming.

Dry Flowers

A big trend we’re seeing for fall is brides choosing dried flowers for a more neutral, rustic look to their bridal bouquets. Dried lavender and daisies are two of our favorites to add as an accent to your arrangement! You can even press and dry the flowers yourself, and keep them long after your ceremony for the memories.

Go Green

With so many fall weddings taking place outdoors in the nice weather, go all natural with a simple all green bouquet. Incorporate green leaves and vines along with a few floral additions such as baby’s breath, ferns and eucalyptus.

More Than Flowers

Your fall bridal bouquet doesn’t need to be limited to only flowers! The season is known for its bright foliage and you can take advantage of that in your own bouquet. Add in a few autumn leaves, some small branches and even berries to create more texture in your floral arrangement.

Fall Outdoor Wedding Ideas: How to Plan Your Ceremony

August 25, 2020 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

If you can’t decide between a winter or summer wedding, fall is the perfect compromise. Not too hot or too cold, you can also move your ceremony outdoors and enjoy the crisp autumn air. From seasonal flowers to tasty desserts, these are a few of our favorite fall outdoor wedding ideas to make your day extra fun.

beautiful fall wedding ideas for your big day

Outdoor Seating

Fall is a great time to take advantage of the nice weather and have outdoor seating for both your ceremony and reception. Create your table settings and centerpieces with your wedding colors while adding a few seasonal touches such as gourds, apples and autumn leaves. You can also use hay bales or wooden chairs to add to the outdoor ambiance for your ceremony.

Plan for Weather

While fall is known for its more temperate weather, it’s also good to have a backup plan in case Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate on your wedding day. Outdoor space heaters and heat lamps can help keep your guests warm in the later hours when the sun goes down, or you can opt for a tent if you feel more comfortable. You can also have some throw blankets on hand as your wedding favors for extra warmth.

Seasonal Flowers

Use your outdoor venue to its fullest by adding some fresh seasonal flowers to your decor. Dahlias and roses are two of our favorite in-bloom flowers during fall. Add them to your centerpieces or bouquet for some extra special floral arrangements. You can even combine all your favorites together to create a beautiful flower arch for when you say “I do”.

Dessert Bar

As you get into the cooler hours of the day, a dessert bar is a great way to warm up your guests. A hot chocolate bar is a fun way to keep everyone warm and cozy with all the best garnishes like peppermint and cinnamon. You can even add some hot toddies for the adults. We recommend choosing some easy to grab desserts as well such as a donut tower, cupcakes or mini apple pies as well.

Here are just a few of our favorite wedding barns in Indiana for your special day.

Nestled in the woods of Crawfordsville, Hidden Hollow’s barn can accommodate up to 250 guests and is perfect for both an indoor or outdoor ceremony. The venue is pet friendly and includes any furniture needed for your special day, event planning, setup + cleanup and more.

October Wedding Ideas You Must See

August 7, 2020 By //  by Gretchen Reynolds

With cooler temperatures and beautiful fall decor, it’s no wonder October is now one of the most popular months to get married. From festive drinks to wedding invites with rustic charm, here are some of our favorite October wedding ideas you must see.

Fall ideas for your October wedding

Earth Tones

With October landing right in the middle of the fall season, this is the perfect chance to take advantage of its earthy colors. You can go the more neutral route with browns, burnt orange or burgundy. If you prefer brighter colors, we recommend choosing a few peach, navy or emerald green colors. You can also incorporate these hues into your bridesmaids dresses, your partner’s tux or boutonnières, and more!

Flavorful Cake

Why not get a little creative with your fall wedding cake? ‘Tis the season to ditch the boring cake flavors and add a little extra spice. Apple and pumpkin spice are two of the most popular October flavors – and also taste great when baked. Gingerbread and red velvet are also fun options for your October wedding ideas, and can be topped with icing, caramel, melted chocolate or even no icing at all!

Toasty Beverages

October is full of festive drinks like apple cider and toasty hot chocolate. Also known for its colder weather, an October wedding is a great time for warm refreshments. One of our favorite October wedding ideas is to treat your guests (and yourself) to a bar full of their favorite seasonal drinks and hot toddies. Be sure to include a variety of options for all ages, along with popular garnishes such as cinnamon, marshmallows, rosemary and more so guests can customize however they’d like.

Seasonal Bouquet
